Welcome to the Artists' Guild of Columbia County

The Guild is a group of professional and amateur artists and patrons of the visual arts located in Columbia County, Georgia.  We provide opportunities for artists to exchange creative ideas and business information, to show and sell their work, and to increase their knowledge through workshops.  We promote the visual arts, sponsor exhibits and offer projects of interest to artists and those interested in the arts.

Carol Dorn Art Classes

After a several year hiatus, Carol Kelly Dorn is once again teaching ongoing youth classes in her Evans studio, and is offering a free introductory class Tuesday, January 17. Art After Dark Winners

This was the first year that the Guild judged Art After Dark.  Categories included Abstract, Animals, Ceramic, Floral, Landscape, Photography, Portrait, Still Life and Jewelry. Judges were David Mascaro and Janice Whiting.  See the full list of winners!

 

New Exhibits

January exhibits include Yadira Payne's Outer Influences~Inner Strength collection at Queensborough Bank; Ruth Pearl and Wenquing Cao at ASU's Reese Library; Yadira Payne's Boriken Revisited collection at the Medical College of Georgia; Lois James at the Government Complex; and Jill Gunn, Nancy Cannon and Kaye Ward at the Columbia County Library.

Artist of the Month - Helen Hutson

Helen Hutson was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland where she attended The Schuler School of Fine Arts for 2 ½ years After leaving school, she trained at the Potomac Horse Center and went on to teach riding and work with horses, did a three year stint as a dog groomer and was a ballroom dance instructor for Fred Astaire for 16 years.

In 1997 she and her husband Bill, moved to South Carolina where she decided to start back into art. She works out of a studio in her home, where she does realistic drawings and paintings of animals. She has done numerous animal portrait commissions and has broadened her subject matter to include landscapes, florals and portraits. She produces work in many mediums, including pen and ink, graphite, pastel, watercolor, acrylic and oil. Her latest venture has been into nature photography.

She is a member of the McCormick Arts Council and the Artists Guild of Columbia County.  Her work can be seen in the gallery shop at the Aiken Center for the Arts and the Red Rooster Gallery in McCormick.

She has won awards at the York Interstate Fair in PA, the Georgia-Carolina and Western Carolina State Fairs, including Best of Department in 2011, the Greenwood Festival of Flowers and had pieces accepted in the 2006, 2010 and 2011 SC State Fair, 2007 South Carolina Artists Exhibition and Greenwood Festival of Flowers Juried Show. Her work was accepted at the 2009, 2010 and 2011 juried shows at the MACK, receiving Honorable Mention in 2010. She received Honorable Mention at the Yellow Jasmine Festival in North Augusta in 2007 and 2nd Place in 2008 and Honorable Mention in 2011. Her photographs won 1st place in all three categories in the McCormick County library's Digital Photography Competition in 2007 and 1st in two categories in W/C Fair 2011. Her art was awarded Best in Class at 2010 Art on Main in Warrenton ,GA in drawing, watercolor & oil and received 3rd Place overall for the oil. In 2011 she won Best in Division in 3 categories and also the People's Choice Award.

She has had three shows at the MACK , the last in September 2008. Her work has also been displayed at the Hitchcock Rehabilitation Center, the AAG Gallery at the Aiken Center for the Arts, the Columbia County Library and MCG Hospital.

She is currently giving adult drawing classes at the MACK. Her work can be seen online on the website for the Artists Guild of Columbia County.
